How we can help you with your Film & TV Productions, in the Studio and on Location too!

Fire Advisor

One essential for any programme depicting the Emergency Services seriously is the need to get it right. This could start with the researcher or scriptwriter and finish up with the director on location. To help you through this, we have the services of a number of fire officers who are available to comment on any matter relating to the Brigade's involvement in the story line. Behind the scenes they would work in conjunction with our safety adviser, particularly when a large or difficult fire sequence is envisaged, to determine the level of safety cover required.

Fire Safety Crew

Fire sequences are usually a straightforward combination of special effects crews working in close conjunction with a fire safety team. Each are made up of competent personnel with a common objective – to achieve the effect as safely as possible. Our fire safety crews are made up of professional fire-fighters under the direction of a fire supervisor appointed by us for the job. All are experienced in film and TV work.

The equipment used meets with the latest standards and includes breathing apparatus, hydraulic cutting equipment, resuscitators, escape sets, extinguishers, helmets and uniforms to mention just some of it. As part of our safety role it may be necessary to consider issuing escape sets to members of the crew who have to be in the immediate vicinity. The fire supervisor would give a familiarisation session to any crew who this applies to.

Health & Safety

Without doubt the health and safety element of a shoot is one of the most important behind the scenes roles to get right.

Normally the responsibility for health and safety lies with the Producer. He or she may delegate the task of overseeing the day to day issues to the 1st Assistant Director. To help reduce some of this burden (but not the responsibility, which remains with the Producer at all times) we have a NEBOSH qualified adviser within the Company. He is a member of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management and have also undergone training as a Safety Representative for BECTU.

Specialising purely in Film, Television and Promotional work and with many years background as a freelance both in front of, and behind the camera,he totally understands the requirements of getting the shot without compromising the safety factor!

Wet Downs

On a great many occasions we are requested to provide a wet-down of an area to be in shot – this can vary from having to wet a small area using a hose connected to a fire hydrant to large areas such as whole runways and motorway sections!

We have a number of vehicles that have been custom built for film work. Each carries upwards of 10,000 litres (2000 gallons) of water. There is a powerful fire pump mounted on a rear platform that controls the amount of water delivered. Using fan-sprays it is possible to drive and wet-down up to three lanes of roadway at the same time, making short work of covering large areas.

The natural progression for the use of these vehicles is to tie in with special effects crews when rain sequences are required. Two of our vehicles have larger capacity fire pumps which are especially useful when used in conjunction with overhead rain rigs.
